Erethin Groester

Erethin Groester is a gnome (page does not exist) mechanic and civic engineer from the hill settlement of Brindlecap. Groester is associated with the maintenance of Brindlecap’s water lifts, clockworks, and subterranean transport routes. Although not a public official, Groester’s technical expertise has made them an important intermediary between the settlement’s craft guilds and its elected Cinder Council (page does not exist).

Groester was born into the Groester household (page does not exist), a family of toolmakers whose workshop stood near Brindlecap’s eastern gate. They received their formal training at the Underhill Collegium (page does not exist), where they specialized in pressure engines and small-scale geothermic systems. During this period, Groester became acquainted with Maelin Voss (page does not exist), a surveyor who later employed them during the Red Sluice Expedition (page does not exist).

The expedition established that a series of damaged sluice gates beneath Brindlecap had been constructed before the settlement’s founding. Groester’s repairs prevented the lower districts from flooding and led to the adoption of the Three-Valve Safeguard (page does not exist), a maintenance custom requiring three independent inspections before a major gate can be reopened. The safeguard remains standard practice among Brindlecap’s waterworks crews.

Groester is also credited with restoring the Morrowwheel (page does not exist), an abandoned brass navigation device recovered from the expedition tunnels. The device is now kept in the Hall of Measures (page does not exist), although its original markings have not been fully deciphered. Groester has declined ownership of the artifact and has instead argued that it should remain available to engineers and historians.

In later accounts, Groester is described as cautious, methodical, and reluctant to accept honors. Their disputes with the Ashcoil Consortium (page does not exist), a mining organization that sought to redirect Brindlecap’s underground water channels, became an important episode in the settlement’s industrial history. Groester’s testimony before the Cinder Council contributed to the passage of the Deepworks Preservation Ordinance (page does not exist), which limits private alteration of the oldest tunnels.
